Cleaning & Caring For Braces

Revamping your smile with braces is more than an investment in your appearance. An aligned smile is also a great way to maintain long-term health and prevent future dental issues.

The truth is, taking good care of your braces is crucial to get the best results. Here are some tips and tricks on how to take care of braces.

How To Keep Braces Clean

Thoroughly cleaning your braces is the easiest way to improve your long term dental health. Establishing good brushing and flossing habits is key to avoiding future dental issues.

Having braces also means having some harder-to-reach areas in your teeth. Food particles can easily get stuck in these areas, and when left unchecked, they cause plaque and lead to dental problems later on.

Follow these simple steps to make your braces (and teeth) sparkle.

Rinse your mouth out with water or mouthwash to release food particles that may be stuck in your teeth and braces.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently brush at a 45° angle around the wires. Be sure to brush your teeth from top to bottom.

Using gentle circular motions, brush around the gum line. Don’t hurry through this process–you want to be sure to get into all those nooks and crannies!

Don’t forget to floss! Start by threading the floss under the main wire. Then carefully and gently move the floss up and down in between your teeth.

Rinse your mouth out with mouthwash or water, and make sure you got into all those hard-to-reach areas. Then you’re done!

How To Take Care Of Braces

While maintaining the cleanliness of your braces is important, it is also important to make some small lifestyle changes to get the best results from your treatment. Properly caring for braces can prevent needing emergency appointments and further safeguard your smile.

Making adjustments to your diet is crucial in order to keep your braces top notch. Avoid foods that are notorious for damaging braces, such as hard candy, gum, taffy, popcorn, caramel, chips, and more. The Lund Orthodontics Superstars can give you a more comprehensive list of foods to avoid during your treatment.

Implementing these simple lifestyle changes makes it easy to keep your braces in good shape and prevent future dental problems.
